Double-row self-aligning ball bearings are suitable for medium radial loads and small axial loads in both directions, for medium to high speeds. The inner ring of this type of bearing has two raceways and the outer ring has a single spherical raceway with its centre of curvature coincident with the bearing axis. Therefore, the axis of the inner ring, balls and cage can deflect to some extent around the bearing centre. This automatically corrects minor angular misalignment of the shaft and housing caused by machining or mounting error.
Double-row self-aligning ball bearings are produced with a cylindrical or tapered bore. Bearings with a tapered bore are usually mounted on the shaft with an adapter sleeve.
Double-row self-aligning ball bearings of types 22 and 23 are also produced with double-sided sealing. Their additional designation is "2RS".
